The roof material you choose sets how your house looks, how it handles hail and heat, and how long until you do this again. Here is how the main options compare for homes in North Texas.

Asphalt shingles
What most houses here have, and for good reason.
Easy to repair, widely available and cost-effective. We install GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed, Atlas and IKO.
Metal
Standing-seam metal lasts 40 years or more and handles wind well. It reflects heat, which helps with cooling. Large hail can dent it, which is usually cosmetic but visible. It costs more than asphalt up front.
Wood shingles and shakes
A natural look that weathers to gray. In Texas heat they dry out, and in many areas they raise fire concerns and insurance costs. Some HOAs and cities restrict them.
Slate
Very long lasting and very heavy. The house framing must be built to carry it. Expensive to install and repair, and uncommon in North Texas.
Clay and concrete tile
Common on Mediterranean and Spanish-style homes. The tile itself lasts a long time and handles heat well, but it is heavy, it can crack under large hail or foot traffic, and the underlayment beneath it wears out and needs replacing long before the tile does.
Synthetic
Composite products made to look like slate or shake, lighter than the real thing and often impact-rated. Newer to the market, so check the manufacturer's track record and warranty.
