Shingle types and colors for North Texas roofs
We install GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed, Atlas and IKO. In North Texas the main choice is between standard architectural shingles and Class 4 impact-rated products, which resist hail better and often earn an insurance premium discount.
Comparing the four shingle grades
| Grade | Typical life | Wind rating | Impact | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Three-tab | 15-20 yrs | 60-70 mph | Not rated | $ | Rarely specified now. Flat appearance and the least hail resistance. |
| Architectural | 25-30 yrs | 110-130 mph | Not rated | $$ | The North Texas default. Dimensional look, good wind numbers. |
| Impact-resistant (Class 4) | 30+ yrs | 110-130 mph | Class 4 | $$$ | Many Texas carriers offer a premium discount. Worth pricing. |
| Designer / luxury | 30-50 yrs | 110-130 mph | Varies | $$$$ | Slate and shake appearance. Common on larger Argyle and Southlake rooflines. |
Typical figures for asphalt shingle systems. Actual ratings vary by product line. We confirm the specification for the exact shingle before ordering.
Manufacturers
The five brands we install
We are not tied to one manufacturer. Which shingle goes on your roof depends on your HOA rules, your insurance scope and what you want the house to look like, and we bring physical samples to the walkthrough instead of asking you to judge color on a screen.

GAF
North America's largest shingle manufacturer. GAF's Timberline HDZ is the most widely installed architectural shingle in the country, and the Camelot and Grand Sequoia designer lines are common on larger Argyle and Southlake rooflines.

Owens Corning
Best known for the SureNail strip on the Duration line, which widens the nailing zone and improves wind performance. That helps on the exposed lots common north-west of the Metroplex.

CertainTeed
The Landmark series is a workhorse architectural shingle, and Grand Manor and Belmont are among the heaviest luxury profiles available. They make sense where a roof is a major part of the elevation.

Atlas
Atlas StormMaster is a Class 4 impact-rated shingle, which matters in North Texas. Many Texas carriers offer a premium discount for a Class 4 roof, and it stands up to hail materially better.

IKO
IKO's Cambridge and Dynasty lines offer strong color blends at competitive pricing, and the Nordic line carries a Class 4 impact rating for hail-prone areas.

What is a Class 4 impact-resistant shingle, and is it worth it in Texas?
Class 4 is the highest UL 2218 impact rating, tested against a two-inch steel ball dropped from twenty feet. In hail-prone North Texas many carriers offer a meaningful premium discount for a Class 4 roof, which can offset the higher material cost over several years.
Which shingle brand is best?
For most North Texas homes the difference between the major manufacturers matters less than the installation. All five we install make good architectural shingles. What actually determines roof life here is the flashing details, ventilation and whether the underlayment was specified correctly.
Does my insurance let me choose a different shingle?
Insurance pays to restore what you had with equivalent material and quality. You can upgrade to a designer profile or an impact-rated shingle by paying the difference between the insurance scope and the upgraded material.
What color shingle is best for a Texas roof?
Lighter colors reflect more heat and marginally reduce attic temperature, though on a properly ventilated roof the difference is smaller than most people expect. Choose for how it looks with your brick and what your HOA permits, and check the HOA before ordering.
Not sure which shingle is right?
No cost, no obligation, and a photo report you keep either way. If there is nothing wrong with your roof, we will tell you that.
