How to check from the ground
Walk around the house, ideally after a windy day, with binoculars or a phone camera zoomed in. Look for:

A missing shingle exposes the underlayment, which is not designed to be the main barrier against sun and rain. Water gets to the decking, and the shingles around the gap are easier for the next storm to lift.
Patch or replace?
A few shingles missing in one area on a roof in good condition: replacing them is usually enough. The roofer should seal them down and match the color as closely as possible.
Missing shingles across the roof, or a roof with widespread lifted shingles: a patch will not hold. If wind caused it, it may be covered by homeowner's insurance.
An old roof that loses shingles in every storm: it is likely time for a replacement.
Why use a roofer
Walking a roof is risky, and replacement shingles have to be woven in with the existing ones and nailed correctly. A roofer can also check for damage you cannot see, like broken seals on shingles that still look flat, and document storm damage for an insurance claim.
