How often

In North Texas, clean gutters at least twice a year:

Late spring, after oak pollen, seed pods and spring storms

Late fall, after the leaves have dropped

Homes under heavy tree cover may need it more often, and it is worth a check after any big storm.

Doing it safely

Use a sturdy extension ladder on level ground, with a stabilizer so it does not rest on the gutter itself

Have someone hold the ladder

Stay off wet or steep roofs

Keep clear of power lines running to the house

Wear gloves, since gutters collect sharp debris and roofing nails

If you are not comfortable on a ladder, this is a job worth paying for.

Cleaning

Scoop debris out by hand or with a gutter scoop, starting near a downspout

Bag the debris instead of dropping it in the beds

Flush each run with a garden hose, working toward the downspout

Watch where the water goes. It should flow steadily to the downspout without pooling.

Downspouts

Run water down each downspout and make sure it flows freely out the bottom

Clear clogs by flushing from the top or bottom with a hose, or with a plumber's snake

Make sure each downspout discharges several feet from the foundation, with an extension or splash block

What to look for while you are up there

Sections sagging or pulling away from the fascia

Standing water, which means the pitch is off

Leaks at seams, corners and end caps

Dents from hail

Granules from the shingles collecting in the gutter, a sign the roof is wearing

Rot or stains on the fascia behind the gutter

Gutter guards

Guards cut down on cleaning, especially under trees, but they do not end it. Check them each season and clear anything sitting on top.

When to call someone

Gutters that keep overflowing even when clean, which may mean they are undersized

Sagging sections or loose hangers

Leaking seams on sectional gutters

Hail dents, which may be covered on a storm claim

Rotted fascia behind the gutters
