Some of the most useful work we do is not the roof itself but the pieces around it. These three come up constantly when we are on a job, so here are straight answers.
Not sure what shape your roof is in?
Free inspection scheduled within 24 hours. Free, with photos you keep.
Ridge vents
What is a ridge vent?
A vent that runs along the peak of the roof, under the ridge cap shingles. Hot, damp air rises out of the attic through it, while cooler air comes in through soffit vents at the eaves.
Is it better than box vents or turbines?
On most homes, a ridge vent paired with clear soffit intake moves air more evenly than a few box vents or turbines. It also has no moving parts and is nearly invisible from the street.
Can I add one without replacing the roof?
Sometimes, but it is easiest and cheapest during a replacement, when the ridge is already open. It also only works if the soffit intake is clear, so both need checking.
Should I keep my power attic fan too?
Usually not. A power fan next to a ridge vent can pull air in through the ridge vent instead of the soffits, which defeats the purpose.
Gutter guards
Do gutter guards work?
They reduce how often gutters need cleaning, especially under heavy tree cover. They do not make gutters maintenance-free. Fine debris and seed pods still collect, and guards need checking and occasional cleaning.
Which kind is best?
Fine mesh guards keep out the most debris. Solid covers that rely on water curling around the edge can overshoot in heavy North Texas downpours. The right choice depends on your trees and roof pitch.
Can guards go on existing gutters?
Often yes, if the gutters are in good shape and properly pitched. If they are dented, sagging or leaking, fix or replace them first.
Window repair and replacement
What window problems do you fix?
Torn or dented screens, broken glass, failed seals that fog between panes, sticking sashes and worn caulk and trim around the frame.
Is hail damage to windows covered by insurance?
Screens and window damage from a storm are often covered on the same claim as the roof. We photograph them during the storm inspection so they get included.
